It was a great pleasure and privilege to return to ITS G. CABOTO Academy again this year to give lectures to aspiring Yacht Masters , stews , chefs , and yachtdesign support professionals.
Together, we explored an extensive range of fascinating topics: from the rich customs and traditions of the yachting world and the evolution of the superyacht market over the last 30 years, to iconic yachts, detailed regulations and classifications based on gross tonnage, various hull shapes and propulsion methods, yacht design fundamentals, current industry trends, and numerous practical insights drawn from real-world experiences.
⚓️ Each session was further enriched by industry experts who shared invaluable personal stories and professional insights:
• Captain Eraldo Fiorentini, currently commanding a 50-meter yacht• Silvia Dedja from RYacht Service Monaco, who provided an in-depth perspective on managing a complex 97-meter yacht such as CarinthiaVII• Tommaso Spadolini, who captivated the audience with his distinctive design vision and engaging anecdotes• Chef Alessandro Poni from the 120-meter Kismet by Lürssen, who revealed the intricacies of culinary excellence at the highest level on board

OTAM 90 SEXY ME

I had the privilege of trying out the OTAM 90 SEXY ME, a 28m open yacht that left me speechless. Built with an Aramat hull and a Carbon Fiber superstructure, she delivers a cruising experience that is both smooth and incredibly powerful. The main deck is divided into three areas: at the stern, a sunbathing haven just above the incredibly spacious swimming platform; in the central area, a super comfortable living space under a large hardtop; and at the bow, another sunbathing spot with a cozy lounge. The navigation bridge is positioned forward. Below deck, she features two guest cabins and a full-beam master suite midship, maximizing the yacht’s width. The crew quarters, with two berths and an independent entrance, are located forward in the bow area. The kitchen and captain’s cabin are aft of the Master Suite, with a dedicated entrance from the main deck lounge. The tender garage accommodates a 4.35m tender.

Her exterior design, penned by Giuseppe Bagnardi of BG DESIGN FIRM, is a perfect blend of aggression, sportiness, and elegance, taking inspiration from luxury hypercars and aeronautical design. The interiors, also by Bagnardi, are dominated by light colors and extensive marble use.

Performance is breathtaking: thanks to twin MTU 2000M96 engines, SEXY ME is capable of planing at 16 knots and reaching an exhilarating top speed of over 43 knots.

Today, we are talking about the Maltese Falcon, an 88-meter sailing yacht that has redefined the industry with its groundbreaking Falcon Rig sail system. This innovative, self-supporting rig features three rotating carbon fiber masts, each supporting five sails, and was engineered by Dykstra Naval Architects in collaboration with Perini Navi.

Originally commissioned by Tom Perkins, a visionary Silicon Valley entrepreneur, the Maltese Falcon was built in 2006 and became one of the most advanced sailing yachts ever created. Its 2,400 square meters of sail can be deployed in just six minutes, allowing it to reach speeds over 24 knots, powered solely by the wind—a remarkable achievement for a yacht of this size.

Designed by the renowned Ken Freivokh.

In 2009, the yacht changed ownership and was acquired by Elena Ambrosiadou, a Greek-British hedge fund manager. Under her ownership, the Maltese Falcon remained an icon of performance, elegance, and innovation.

In 2022, the yacht was acquired by a new owner, an experienced sailor and former Perini Navi yacht owner. Soon after, it underwent a major six-month refit at the Lusben shipyard in Livorno, Italy, completed in April 2023. This extensive refit included:

• Full hull repaint in its signature “Perini Blue.”

• Servicing of the Falcon Rig, including the rotation system and sail handling mechanisms.

• Overhaul of the main engines, generators, and propellers.

• Teak deck replacement to enhance durability and aesthetics.

• Upgrades to energy efficiency, reducing fuel consumption and emissions.

• Interior refurbishments, including updates to guest cabins, bathrooms, and the galley for a more modern, luxurious experience.
